All you need is a chisel, sandpaper, oil or varnish, a power drill and some steel legs and, with very little carpentry skill, you can turn a slice of a tree or the staves of a barrel into a table or bench. Of power tools, Kevin has few. Of hand-hewing manual labor, plenty.
Organic forms, unusual thickness, voids, knots, cracks, bark – these are elements of perfection in Kevin’s eyes. He loves letting the natural art of the wood express itself with as little manipulation on his part as possible.
He’s made dozens of pieces from slices and slabs of ash, black walnut, elm, hickory, pine, spalted maple, white oak, and red oak, now spread out among the Goat Mountain Glamping tents and the homes of family members as a constant reminder (is the hope) of the beauty of trees and the call of the wilderness, our ancient home.
